Chorion Villus Sampling

CVS is a prenatal diagnostic procedure used to detect genetic abnormalities in the fetus. Indications would include previous child with chromosomal abnormalities, family history of genetic disorders, abnormal ultrasound findings and abnormal maternal serum screening test results.

The technique involves obtaining a small sample of cells from the placenta, either through the cervix or the abdomen, guided by ultrasound. The sample is then analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and other conditions.

CVS is usually performed between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. However, it’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with a fetal medicine specialist before opting for CVS, as it carries a small risk of miscarriage.
