Fetal Blood Sampling

Fetal blood sampling, also known as cordocentesis or percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of the fetus during pregnancy. It’s typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks gestation. Indications for fetal blood sampling include:

1.Suspected fetal blood disorders, such as anemia or thrombocytopenia.
2.Suspected fetal infection, such as parvovirus B19 or cytomegalovirus.
3.Fetal chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.

The procedure involves inserting a thin needle through the mother’s abdomen and into the umbilical cord under ultrasound guidance. A small amount of fetal blood is then drawn into a syringe for analysis. Risks include fetal injury, bleeding, and miscarriage, though these are rare when performed by experienced fetal medicine specialists
